Socio-cultural learning of youth in mobile societies (SLYMS, ERASMUS +) Conference
April 9-11, 2019

Youth on the move: Social inclusion through informal and non-formal learning

 

The focus of the conference is on social inclusion of disadvantaged mobile young people through informal and non-formal education. Effective education of displaced, disadvantaged, and marginalized young populations should be based on informal and non formal learning models that add to formal education and stand on the values of mutual acceptance and understanding, intercultural sensitivity, solidarity, cooperativeness, and on the right to cultural and linguistic diversity. Exploring the differences as well as the similarities between countries and localities and how young people experience and deal with their own situation, culture, work and education lie at the heart of this conference.

We invite abstracts from experienced as well as young and precariously employed researchers, youth workers, and teachers, concerned with informal and non-formal education, the sociology of youth, and youth studies in general. Although presentations and discussions will mainly revolve around youth mobility and social inclusion through informal and non-formal learning, participants are welcome to discuss theoretical and practical implications of work on precarious youth on the move.

Presentations can be related to the following areas:

  • Youth mobility and transnational mobile transitions.
  • Youth from vulnerable social settings: Young precariat, NEET, Refugees, Migrants.
  • Social Inclusion of young people via informal and non formal learning pathways
  • Youth work and inclusion
  • Socio-cultural Events and youth participation: skills and competences development, empowerment, resilience and inclusion

The papers will be selected according to relevance to the areas of the conference.

The conference will be organised around short presentations (20 min max) with space for open discussion.

The three-day conference itself will be dedicated to paper sessions and round tables.

There will be no conference fee.

The venue is the Lab of Sociology of Education (http://socedu.ece.uth.gr/index.php/en/), which is located in the main campus of the University of Thessaly (UTh) in Volos. The Lab belongs to the Department of Early Childhood Education at the University of Thessaly. UTh, and specifically the Lab of Sociology of Education has a significant expertise on the field of childhood, youth, and education, children and youth’s policy, minorities, intercultural education etc., as well as a vast experience in innovative educational interventions with the participation of young people and children. UTh is one of Greece’s leading Social Sciences and Humanities academic units.

In the organization of the workings of the conference are also involved the other partners of SLYMS: the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain), and more specifically the Centre of Youth, Society and Communication Studies (JOVIS.com, www.joventut.udl.cat) and the Network on Youth and Society Studies (www.juventudysociedad.net). Moreover, ARSIS, a Greek N.G.O., which deals with the support and service of young people from vulnerable social settings. Furthermore, Conversas Associação Internacional (CAI), which involves in Youth, Non- Formal Education, and Adult Education and finally, the Municipality of Thessaloniki through the Department of Education and Sport.

Instructions
Abstracts must be written in English in no more than 200 words and include 3-5 keywords. Please submit your abstract and full contact details as electronic files no later than the 8th of January 2019. Send the abstract to pechtelidis@uth.gr

The deadline for notification for abstracts is 1st March 2019.
